With support from the botanical gardens, a group of inhabitants who were especially interested in an environmental approach to their surroundings created a garden which attracts butterflies. They coined their project 'Prairie in the polder'. The project is part of a series of initiatives to enhance the living condition of butterflies in the area between Utrecht and Amersfoort. These initiatives are coordinated by the Vlinderbaan foundation.
To underline the initiative, decorative artwork, prints of butterflies has been added to the western side of the spaceboxes.

General information
The spaceboxes are made from composite material which is traditionally used in aerospace and yachting. It is a rigid and strong, yet light building material with excellent thermal qualities. The R-value of the walls is 3,4 W/m2. The silvery layer on the outside of the walls reflect some 80% of the solar warmth. The use of composite material allows for more freedom in design than usually possible in housing projects. The material can be recycled completely, which makes the units very environmentally friendly. Each spacebox is a small studio of 21 gross m2 of which 18 m2 floorspace is available to its inhabitant. The units can be arranged in any number of ways because of their plug-and-play character.

The name of the building
La Capanna (Italian for 'hut') is associated with the Bolognalaan at which the spaceboxes are situated. In Dutch the spacexes are also referred to as 'kleurdozen' because of their colourful appearance.
