Skyline De Uithof

Scale model according to the 'architects consultations', 1968

Below, a picture of the scale model reflecting the ideas of the architects E.F. Groosman (designer of the Kruytbuilding), J.A. Lucas, D.J. Istha, M.F. Duintjer, G.J. van der Grinten (designer of the Wentbuilding), Sj. Wouda, H.C. Stadlander and J.D. Schoute (both from Haskoning). Some elements of the present day 'De Uithof' may be recognized. The highest building is Van Unnikbuilding, located at its present position. The Ruppertbuilding, the low volume just to the left of the Van Unnikbuilding with the adjacent observatory tower can also be found. More to the front there is the cross-shaped Kruytgebouw which is twinned to the west. This twin building was supposed to contain the faculty of Chemistry, but was never realized.

In the centre there is a UFO-shaped building which was to be the large auditorium. This facilty was never build either. In a way, the Educatorium (1997) can be seen as the successor of this building.

The area in the front-left corner of the picture is not unlike the present situation. The mathematical institute is there, adjoined by the small building was was designed to contain the 'Elektronisch Rekencentrum', later 'ACCU', the university's computer centre. Also we see the Van de Graafflaboratory, the Ornsteinlaboratory and the Bleekerbuilding. At the location where the building fo geosciences was built in the early 1980s we see a large square shaped building which never materialized.

Other striking details are: large office buildings which were meant to contain the facilities for the humanities, across the 'Leuvenlaan' opposite the 'Ruppertbuilding'. At this location no building activities have been carried out so far. At the right of the picture we see three multi storey buildings, linked together: the academic hospital. This location has also remained unbuilt. Through 'De Uithof' we see massive road contruction of which the double-laned 'Zandlaan' in the direction of 'Bunnik' is the most unlikely development from present perspective. This rural, green area has been spared over the years.

The 1969 version of the plan (drawing) elaborates on the eastern part of 'De Uithof'. The 1968 version of the masterplan can also be evaluated as a photographic representation pasted into a detailed area map.
