| The name of the building |

The building derives its name from Androclus,
a poor Roman slave. Androclus was badly treated by his master
and fled. He escaped into the mountains, but was weakened
by the lack of food and took shelter in in cave. A lion
entered this cave and woke Androclus with a loud roar.
Although he feared for his life, Androclus saw that the
lion limped because of a sharp thorn in his paw. He helped
the lion and removed the thorn. As a token of gratitude,
the lion provided Androclus with food and for a while they
lived togehter peacefully. However, Roman soldiers tarcked
his down and arrested him. Slaves that had fled were traditionally
fed to the lions in the arena. In the case of Androclus,
the audience was surprised by the fact that he was spared
by the lion. This lion, of course, being the same one,
Androclus had been with earlier.
Both the lion and the slave were given their freedom back
and lived on happily. Androclus is taken to be equivalent
to the serving role of the vet and hence used as a symbol. |
