Long term study number 11 was made into a scale model by members of
the planological project team which consisted of participants from
the city as well as from the university. The project team was active
from 1977 until 1979. The wooden elements of the scale model were
not fitted together permanently to enable flexible changes to the
plans and to allow for experimentation. Existing architecture was
ignored or denied, future architecture deemed irrelevant. Creating
relations at a human scale was considered most important. Radial
conectivity was searched for, from the periphery to the centre
by means of green wedges, optical lines and traffic infrastructure.
At this time the buildings 'Centrumgebouw Noord', 'Langeveldgebouw' and the building for 'Geoscience' were commisioned, designed in
red bricks, and very much in line with 1970s views.
This study allowed for two residential areas, one near Dentistry at the former location of Medicine and a second just east of
the 'Hoofddijk' fortification. Clearly sound limitations related
to the nearby motorways were not an issue yet! Nr. 11 included
housing for 7.100 inhabitants.
The city of Utrecht was positive on the ideas laid down, but the
university policy makers were terrified. In 1980 this controversy
ended fruitful cooperation between city and university for a great
number of years.
